5 Years Time

So I was having a lovely cup of tea and a natter with my sister when we did the whole ‘where would you like to be in 5 years time?’ question.

My sister imagined her bright sunny future (it’s always sunny in 5 years time) and then decided that it was too ambitious, and perhaps she was imagining something that could only be achieved in 8 or 9 years.

I suggested we look back at the previous 5 years to gauge some idea of what we can achieve in 5 years. After all, 5 years is a long time, we just seem to forget this once we’re out of school and the years start blending into each other.

So 5 years ago it was March 2009. It was the year of the G20 summit, the swine flu epidemic, Michael Jackson’s death and a plane emergency landing in the Hudson River. We were also in the midst of the recession.

I was living in Southampton, working at Ordnance Survey and living with 4 boys. Good times!

Since then I have:

  • Changed job 5 times
  • Moved house 4 times and went from renting to buying
  • Got engaged then married
  • Got pregnant then had a baby
  • Travelled in Australia for two months
  • Decided that I was too old to wear hoodies 24/7
  • Accumulated a whole household worth of furniture and other stuff
  • Completely lost my ability to do A-level style maths or anything involving numbers at all

  • That’s quite a lot! Wow, looking back I realise that I have been busy! I can achieve a lot in 5 years! So if I wanted to imagine the next 5 years I could cram a lot in.

5 years is the length if your secondary school career- from year 7 to year 11. Your personality, goals in life and likes and dislikes can change a lot in 5 years. I’ve changed and grown so much as a person. I had the Quarter Life Crisis hard in about 2011/ 2012 and came out the other side with a kind of deep contentment and a feeling of finally becoming a proper ‘adult’.

So it might be foolish to picture where I might be in 5 years time when future me might have grown and changed and like different things to present me.

I’ll give future me some options instead. So, in 5 years time I hope to have achieved some or all of these options:

  • Travelling for two months again somewhere I haven’t been before
  • Grow another child. Or two. Or three. It depends how this one goes!
  • Retrieve my brain from wherever it disappeared to! Stop finding mental arithmetic so daunting and be able to talk about some things that are intellectual and not baby-related
  • Live abroad for a year
  • Learn to recycle and compost properly, garden and grow vegetables
  • Become so proficient at cleaning that it doesn’t feel like a chore
  • Develop family habits / traditions
  • Teach my son lots of things
  • Complete a big creative project such as decorating, making something etc. Get the sewing machine out!
  • Start ice skating again or some other sport

  • What do you think? Is it achievable?

Have a think back to your last 5 years and see how much your life has changed, then think about the next 5 years to come. What would you like to achieve in that time?
